As Ferreira pulled her black BMW from the driveway of her Robert Place home in Irvington around 10 p.m., her neighbor and friend Nikki told her she looked “beautiful” and waved goodbye.

So, on Sunday, this 15-year-old Newark boy traded in his usual dress of jeans and a t-shirt for swimming trunks and a towel as he joined nearly 150 other youths for an annual excursion to Seaside Heights—a trip aimed to reduce violence in the city.
